Yes and no! Yes, for two reasons:

  • Chemistry has a limited number of places, so if you do not put Chemistry in the first two places of your preferred list of subjects then we will not normally make you an offer to study chemistry - see chemistry FAQ.
  • If the offer is successful, we use your first-choice subjects to construct the offer- see offer construct.

No, because within the structure of the degree programme you are not tied into studying any particular subject that you tell us about in the application process.

We want to give you as much flexibility as possible!

To summarise, if your application is successful and you end up reading Natural Sciences at Durham then you are able to switch your subjects around up until the end of the third teaching week (where the Department has space on the module and the choices meet the criteria of the Natural Science degree programme). This unfortunately though does not apply to Chemistry.
