This article has been written to help you find out information about our courses and departments.

Department Information

If you’d like to find information on the department that runs the course you’re interested in, just click on the department name in the Department column in the table below. Their webpage will have information on things like staff profiles, student testimonies, employability, teaching methods, facilities and research.

Course Information

We have an extensive Course Database on our website. This will give you the most up-to-date information on: course essentials, course summary, learning and teaching, entry requirements and fees and funding. To find the correct part of the Course Database for the course you’re interested in, just click on its title in the Course column of the table below.

Module Information

If you want more information about the core and optional modules on a course, then the Handbook column on the table below will take you to the Programme Regulations for that course. They are the regulations for current students, so may change for the coming year, but should hopefully offer you a good guideline as to what you could be studying. Once in the Programme Regulations, you can click on the Module Code (which will look something like, for example CLAS1301) and this will take you to the individual Module Description where you can find out about the module: aims, content, learning outcomes, methods of teaching, contact hours and assessment methods.

Durham’s timetable offers a great range of flexibility. If your course allows it (which you can check in the Programme Regulations), you may be able to take an elective module from another Department. You can check out the Open Modules available to take at Level 1, at Level 2 and at Level 3. We also have some FAQ's around modular degrees which are available to view.

Placement Year and Exchange Opportunities

It is possible to do a placement year with almost all of our degrees (currently not possible on Law, Earth Sciences and Archaeology).

A number of our courses have a year abroad built into them, but you may also want to take part in an exchange programme, you can read about exchange and Erasmus.

Hundreds of Durham students each year take the opportunity to spend a period abroad. We also have a range of study abroad opportunities available to our students.

Study a Language Alongside Your Degree

If you get the opportunity to take modules from outside of your department (the Faculty Handbook will tell you if this is possible), then you might want to use this as an opportunity to learn or develop a language. Our Centre for Foreign Language Study Centre for Foreign Language Study offers a huge range of languages at different ability levels to help you do just that.
